An introduction to playing Snakes and Ladders

Open Snakes and Ladders, check the instructions and begin a round. Reach square 100 exactly. A roll past 100 leaves the token where it is. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move. Begin with the same-device two players mode shown on the page. Look at what changes after your first action.

Something to practise

Locate the buttons and input area before beginning a long round. Use the on-screen labels to avoid an accidental restart. Keep the objective visible.

Understand the aim

Reach square 100 exactly. A roll past 100 leaves the token where it is. Keep that objective in view throughout the round. Try to explain the aim in your own words.

How a round unfolds

  1. Player 1 rolls first, starting before square 1.
  2. Move the number of squares shown by the die.
  3. Follow a snake or ladder when landing on its starting square.
  4. Alternate turns until one player reaches 100.

Your inputs

Use the on-screen controls with a mouse or touch. Keep the playing area visible while using these controls. Read the example below alongside these instructions.

Follow the example

From square 98, rolling 2 wins. Rolling 3 overshoots and leaves the token at 98. Your next round may have a different position, so inspect it before acting. Notice the change in the playing area.

A common point of confusion

A roll of six does not grant an extra turn in this version. Check the rule before repeating the action. Watch the feedback after an action. A message can explain whether the input was accepted or whether a rule needs attention.
