Getting started with Futoshiki

Choose a round of Futoshiki and settle into its rules. Place 1–4 once in each row and column while obeying every inequality. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move. Keep the instructions close while learning this activity. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions.

Twelve 4×4 puzzles with fixed starter values.

A small practice goal

Watch the feedback after an action. A message can explain whether the input was accepted or whether a rule needs attention. Refer to the controls when needed.

Your objective

Place 1–4 once in each row and column while obeying every inequality. The feedback beside the game helps you follow the round. Notice how the game responds to your input.

Work through the instructions

  1. Select an editable square.
  2. Read inequalities by their row/column coordinates below the board.
  3. Enter 1–4.
  4. Check puzzle verifies both Latin-square rules and inequalities.

How your actions work

Click or tap squares or graph edges. Number boards include a digit pad. Undo reverses the previous change; Check puzzle validates the solution. Keep the playing area visible while using these controls. Make sure you are interacting with the game rather than the surrounding page.

A useful example

r1c2 < r1c3 means row 1 column 2 is smaller than row 1 column 3. Apply the same reasoning to the position in your own round. Verify the rule before continuing.

A useful caution

An inequality specifies order, not an exact difference. Check the rule before repeating the action. Locate the buttons and input area before beginning a long round. Use the on-screen labels to avoid an accidental restart.
