15 Puzzle: a guide for your next round

Use a short break to learn the rhythm of 15 Puzzle. Arrange 1 to 15 in reading order with the empty square at the bottom right. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move. Make your first input carefully and watch the result. Look at what changes after your first action.

One thing to notice as you play

Watch the feedback after an action. A message can explain whether the input was accepted or whether a rule needs attention. Notice the feedback after each input.

What you need to achieve

Arrange 1 to 15 in reading order with the empty square at the bottom right. Keep that objective in view throughout the round. Keep the controls in easy reach.

Work through the instructions

  1. Select a tile directly beside the empty square.
  2. The tile slides into the gap; diagonal moves are not allowed.
  3. Use Undo to step back one move.
  4. Finish the ordered board, or choose New puzzle.

Choosing and moving on screen

Use the on-screen controls with a mouse or touch. Read a button’s label before selecting it. A new-round button replaces the current round.

See how the rules apply

When the gap is in the last square, only the tile above it and the tile to its left can move into it. Use the example as a guide rather than a substitute for reading your board. Notice the change in the playing area.

Keep this in mind

A distant tile cannot jump across other tiles. Compare the situation with the worked example. Keep the stated aim separate from side details such as animation or appearance. Progress is measured by the game’s own completion or scoring rules.
